Pre War
Born approximately 1886 son of Henry and Charlotte Smith. In 1911 living with widowed father elder brother and wife Emma at 6 Riverside Cottages, Stanstead Abbotts. Charles worked as a local butcher.
Wartime Service
Enlisted in 3rd Battalion Essex Regiment, this was a home-based unit based in Harwich and then in Felixtowe, providing drafts for other units. It seems unlikely that Charles served abroad. Date of death and burial at home may indicate victim of influenza epidemic.
