Frank Coe was born in Saffron Walden, Essex on 25 Mar 1888 to Albert James Coe, wheelwright, and Annie Susan (nee Bunting).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Albert G (born 1876, houseboy), Frederick C (born 1878, yard boy), William J (born 1881), George (born 1884), Alice (born 1886), Frank and Herbert (born 1890) were living at Mill Lane, Saffron Walden, Essex.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Albert (shoeing smith), Frederick (carman), William (domestic groom), George (baker), Frank, Herbert, Rose (born 1892) and Harry (born 1894 were living at 16, Mill Field, Saffron Walden.

Wartime Service

Frank was enlisted as Private G/37054 in 1st Battalion Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment).


No Service Record was found for Frank. The Battalion served in the Battles of the Somme 1916( Albert 1- 13 Jul, Bazentin 14-17 Jul, High Wood (20-25 Jul), and in 1917 having moved to the Arras area in the Battles of 1st Scarpe (9-14 Apr) and 2nd Scarpe (23-24 Apr). Frank was killed in the last action on 23rd Apr 1917, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 18s 7d was paid to his widow Gertrude.
