Pre War

Born 1896 in Bennington, Hertfordshire. The son of Mark and Ellen Smith. The youngest of four children.


The 1901 Census records Alfred aged 5 living with his parents, 2 brothers and sister at Warpoles Farm, Bennington, Herts and in 1911 Alfred, then aged 15, was working as a baker’s assistant and lodging with the baker in Watton at Stone, Hertfordshire. He also lived at Haultwich, Little Munden, Ware, Herts.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted in Hertford. Joining the Royal Garrison Artillery. In 1916 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field (LG 18.08 1916 issue 29701 page 7890).


No detail of the Citation for which he received the Military Medal has been found.

Additional Information

CWGC Inscription Reads, “Son of Mark and Ellen Smith of Haultwich, Little Munden, Ware, Hertfordshire”.
