Albert Smith was born in 1883 in Watford to Aaron Smith, labourer, and Susan (nee Loveridge).
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Thomas (born 1883), Riley (born 1886), Sophia (born 1888), Minnie (born 1891), Alfred 1893), Emily (born 1895), James (born 1899) were living at North Cottages, Markyate.
Albert married Ethel Rose Starkins in 1906 in St Albans District.
On the 1911 Census Albert and his wife Ethel Rose were living at 33, Bedford Road with their children William Joseph (born 1909) and Florence May (born 1910), there would be further children: Ernest J (born Oct 1911), Herbert Ronald (born 19 Apr 1918?)
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted as Private 29210 in the Essex Regiment No Service record was found for him. He probably went of France in 1916 to join 13 (service) Battalion (West Ham) of the Regiment and May have taken part in Battles of Delville Wood ( 15 Jun-3 Sep), Ancre (13-18 Nov) in 196 and in 1917 in Operations on the Ancre (11 Jan-15 Mar) before transferring to the Arras area. Albert was killed in action on 28 Apr 1917 in a period of no major engagements the Series of Battles named as the Battle of Arras.

War Gratuity of £ and arrears of £3 1s 11d was paid to his father Aaron.
*1 We have listed this man as not on the Watford memorials. It is possible that he is either the A D or A G Smith who are listed on a memorial, but have yet to be positively identified.
