Pre War
Thomas Smart was born in St Margaret's, Leicester in 1866 to William Smart and Sarah (nee Gill).
On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Anne (born 1858), William (born 1864) Thomas and grandson Thomas (born 1872) were living at 26, Grundon Street, Leicester.
Thomas married Emma West in 1895.
On the 1901 Census Thomas with Emma and son William (born 18999)were living at 5, Court C, Frog Island, Leicester.
On the 1911 Census the family of Thomas, Emma and daughter Violet(born 1911) were living at 4, Court A, Burley Lane, Leicester.
Wartime Service
Thomas enlisted as a Territorial in the Leicestershire Regiment as Private 20090 in the 2nd /4th. 2nd/4th Battalion Leicester Regiment was raised in Sep 1914 as part of 2nd Lincoln & Leicester Brigade, 2nd North Midland Division . In Jan 1915 they moved to Luton and in Jul 1915 to St Albans. It is likely that Thomas was taken ill and although treated in Tring War Hospitals he died of pneumonia on 2 Nov 1915 and is buried in Tring Cemetery.
Additional Information
War Gratuity £3 and arrears of £2 7s 3d was paid to his widow.
