Pre War

Arnold Samuel Clifford was born in 1891 to Alfred Clifford, police constable, and Esther (nee Merridon).

On the 1891 census the family of parents, Alice B (born 1883), Alfred C (born 1885), Leonard (born 1886) and William V (born 1888) were living at Barracks, Littleworth, Bucks.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Leonard and William V (gardener’s labourer), Arnold Samuel, and Mary F (born 1898) were living at Lower Street, Tingewick, Bucks.

On the 1911 Census his parents and Mary were living at Maids Moreton Avenue Lodge, 19 Stratford Road, Buckingham. His father had retired from Bucks Police and was a jobbing gardener.

His parents later lived at 64, Bourtonville, Buckingham. Samuel was Teacher at Norton School. Dates not known.

Wartime Service

Arnold attested as aTerritorial Soldier on 19 Sep 1914 for the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment in 1st/10th Battalion as Private TF/2596. His service record shows that he served from 1909-11 in the 10th Battalion of the Regiment. On 30 Oct 1914 Arnold sailed, having opted for Foreign Service with his Battalion, from Southampton for India, arriving in Bombay on 2 Dec 1914. On 11 May 1915 he transfeered to 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, part of 18th Indian Infantry Brigade, 6th (Poona) Division, Indian Army and went to Mesopotamia. After the initial advance on Baghdad the Expeditionary force was driven back and put under siege in Kut- al-Amara (7 Dec 1915–29 Apr 1916), the garrison surrendering to the Turkish forces despite efforts to relieve.
Arnold may have been evacuated back to India as he was operated on for intestinal blockage in Ambala, India and died on 27 Jul 1916.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 10s and arrears of £12 8s 8d was paid to his father who also received probate of £115 0s 10d.
