On the 1881 Census the family were living at Nelson, Horsham, where his father was working as a bricklayer and Frederick was 5 days old. They remained in Horsham in 1891 but had moved to 42 Trafalgar Road. By 1901 he had moved out of the family home and was listed in Highland Road, Leatherhead, Surrey as a boarder at the home of Charles and Mary Farrant, and working as a Grocer's Assistant. He continued in the grocery trade and in 1911 was a Grocer's Shop Assistant in Brackley, Northamptonshire, living at the home of Alfred and Lucy Lemon at The Central Supply Stores, Brackley.

His parents later lived at 69 High Street, Hemel Hempstead, Herts
