*1 Howard Joseph SLATER (as recorded on the Barley War Memorials) was born on 17th November 1886, in Barley, Hertfordshire, son of Mark Alfred Slater a Farm Labourer and Harriet Slater (nee Howard). His parents were married on 5th July 1873, at St Margaret of Antioch Church, Church Lane, Barley, Herts. They went on to have seven children.
Howard was Baptised Joseph Howard Slater, on 27th February 1887, at St Margaret of Antioch Church, Barley, Herts.
1891 Census, recorded as Joseph aged 4, living with his parents, three sisters and two brothers, in King William Yard, High Street, Barley, Herts.
1901 Census, recorded as Joseph (14), he has left school and is working as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, sister Daisy (11), brothers Arthur (21) and Harry (17), in High Street, Barley, Herts.
1911 Census, recorded as Joseph (24) single and working as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, brothers Arthur and Harry, still in the High Street, Barley, Herts. At the time he enlisted he was employed by Hertfordshire County Council.
The Soldiers Died In The Great War (SDITGW) database records that he was living in Royston when he enlisted at Hertford (*2)
Wartime Service
Howard travelled to the County Town of Hertford on the 20th November 1915, to enlist in the Hertfordshire Regiment, issued with the service No. 6021. On completion of his training, Howard was transferred to the 6th Battalion, Princess Charlette of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) with the service No. 36449, prior to going to France in June 1916.
Howard was Killed in Action on 1st October 1916, aged 29, the first day of the Battle of the Ancre Heights (Battle of the Ancre Heights 1st Oct – 11th Nov 1916), he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier & Face 11 D.

His mother Harriet was refused a dependents pension.
Harriet received his effects of £4-15s-09d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
*1 Records vary some give Howald Joseph Slater, some Howard and some Joseph Howard Slater the CWGC use Howard. The Hertfordshire Regimental Memorial, All Saints Church, Hertford, record him as J H Slater.
*2 The Soldiers Died In The Great War (SDITGW) database records that he was living in Royston when he enlisted at Hertford. It is likely that Royston was given because it was the nearest large town or because it was the postal town for the village of Barley.
