Pre War

According to his attestation papers he was born in 1884, in Bengeo, he was living at 11 Cowbridge, Hertford, and was employed as a labourer when he enlisted.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in the 5th Battalion Bedfordshire on 20th March 1916 at Hertford and on 12th December 1916 formerley 6468. He was transferred to the 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He went to France on 30th November 1916 as part of the 110th Brigade of the 38th Division. In April-May 1917 they were taking part in the Allied Arras Offensive and at the Second Battle of Bullecourt at the beginning of May William was killed in action, but his body was never recovered.

Additional Information

His next of kin was his father George, who was living in Whitehill Cottages, Hitchin, in 1919, whilst his brother Arthur was stationed in Germany, he also had five married sisters.
