Pre War

John William Clark was born in Rye, Sussex, in 1879, the eldest son of John Burt Clark and his wife Maryann. On the 1881 Census they were living at Winchelsea Road, Rye where his father worked as a sailmaker. The family remained in Rye in 1891 but moved to 3 Bath Buildings.

His parents were still living in Rye in 1901 but John and his brother Ernest were boarders at the home of Louisa and her daughter Elizabeth Smith at 26 Apsley End, Hemel Hempstead, where the brothers were working as hairdressers.

John married Lizzie Pearman in Hemel Hempstead in 1901 and they had moved to Oxford House, High Street, Iver on the 1911 Census where he continued in his occupation as hairdresser.

He was said to be back living at Hempstead, Herts on enlistment and his widow's address on pension records was Georgeville, Apsley End, Hemel Hempstead.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Slough, Bucks and served with the 5th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

He was killed in action on 23 March 1918. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £11 8s 1d. She also received a pension of 13 shillings 9d from 14 October 1918, which was later increased to £1 13s 9d.
