Charles Clarkson saw no active service on the Western Front. He arrived in France with his Battalion on the 10th January 1917, serving as the Commander of “D”” Company. He had been sent on an instructional course with the V Army when he developed Generalised Septicaemia, which quickly led to his death. His name is not recorded on the Knebworth village war memorial.
