Pre War

Joseph Stephan Clapham was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1892, son of Frederick William Clapham a, Market Garden Nurseryman and Ellen Elizabeth Clapham (nee Bonnett). One of five children although one died in infancy.


Baptised in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts on 17th January 1892.


1901 Census records Joseph aged 9, living with his parents, Sister Edith (11), brothers Frederick (5) and Lawrence (3) at, 3 Holmwood Road, Enfield, Middx.


No 1911 Census record was found for Joseph. His parents, sister Edith, brothers Frederick and Lawrence were living at, 329 Pretoria Terrace, Hertford Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His grandmother Mary Ann Bonnett was living with the family.

Wartime Service

Joseph enlisted at Tottenham, Middx, posted to the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) with the service number G/10203.


The Battalion embarked at Avonmouth, Bristol, Gloucestershire, in March 1915, sailed via Malta to Alexandria, Egypt, then on to Mudros arriving in April. The Battalion landed at Cap Helles, on 25th April, they were involved in Heavy fighting there until evacuated on the night of 7th & 8th January 1916, when they returned to Egypt”.


Joseph was wounded during the heavy fighting and evacuated to H.M.H.S “Soudan” where he died of his wounds on 25th November 1915, while returning home for treatment, he was buried at sea. He has no grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey/Gallipoli, to the missing.

Additional Information

His effects of £7-6s-2d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity went to his father Frederick Clapham.
