Biography
Frederick Dowse was born on 6th June 1891at Abbots Langley. He was the eldest son of Alfred and Susan Dowse of Bedmond. The couple had four sons and four daughters. Alfred worked as a House Painter. At the time of the 1901 Census Frederick was living with his grand-mother, Hannah Dowse, at Bedmond. By 1911 he had returned to live with his family also at Bedmond.
In October 1915 the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine noted that Frederick married Edith, Maud, Amelia.
Frederick was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in June 1917, where he was listed serving with the Royal West Kent Regiment. When he enlisted he was working as a Kitchen-man at the Leavesden Asylum. The Parish Magazine noted in August 1917 that Frederick had been reported sick/wounded, but no other detail was given. By January 1918 the Magazine listed Frederick as serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment.
Frederick Dowse survived the War, as did his brothers Owen and Alfred. Alfred served with the Hertfordshire Regiment and was badly wounded in December 1916, and eventually lost a leg as a result of his wounds. Frederick was also a cousin of several others of the Dowse family living locally in Abbots Langley and Bedmond.
