Frederick Arthur Clamp (known as Arthur) was born in 1895 in Snarestone, Leicestershire, the son of Alfred and Alice Clamp and one of three brothers.
On the 1901 Census he was living with his mother and siblings George and Bernard at Marstone Road, Snarestone, Leicestershire. His father was not listed with them but was a boarder at the home of Thomas and Sarah Adcock in Hadley, Shropshire, and working as a Engineer at the Brickworks.
On the 1911 Census the family were living at Lower Lodge, Bourne End, Boxmoor, Herts, where his father was working as an Engineer in the Gravel Pits and Frederick was a Stable Boy (domestic).
His mother was later recorded as living at Westbrook Lodge, Boxmoor, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and served with the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 2 February 1915, initially as a Private, but rising to Company Sergeant Major.
He was killed in action on 24 August 1918, aged 23, during the second Battle of the Somme, when they were moving to assembly positions for an attack on Thilloy. He is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs A Clamp, Westbrook Lodge, Boxmoor, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH". His mother received a war gratuity of £26 and pay owing of £32 17s 3d at his father's request. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
