Pre War

Frederick Ernest CHUCK was born on 4th September 1888, in Radlett, Hertfordshire, son of William Chuck a Labourer and Sarah Alice Chuck (nee Nunn). One of their eight children although two died in infancy. He was Baptised on 4th November 1888, in the Parish of Radlett.


1891 Census records Frederick aged 2, living with his parents and brother Henry Frederick (5) at Beech Cottage, Aldenham Road, Aldenham, Herts. The family had a boarder Alfred Samuels 17, a Railway Porter.


1901 Census records Frederick aged 12, living with his parents, brothers Henry (15), Arthur (3), sisters Mary (9) and Ethal (6), in Park Street Lane, Park Street, St Albans, Herts.


1911 Census, Frederick (22), his parents and brother Arthur (13) are still living in Park Street Lane, Park Street.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted in London, posted to the 7th Battalion, Rifle Brigade and issued with the service number 5174.


The 7th Battalion returned to Aldershot, in March 1915, for final training, mobilized for war, they landed at Boulogne, France on 19th/20th May 1915. Frederick was Killed in Action on 25th July 1915, possible during the Actions of Hooge. He has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium to the missing. Additional Information

His mother Sarah received a Dependents Pension of 5/-a week from 4th July 1916, and his effects of £1-15s-05d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.


In 1916 his parents are recorded as living at “Glen Villa”, London Colney, Herts.
