St Mark’s Church Plaque, Colney Heath, Not on the St Albans memorials

He was born in St Peter’s, St Albans, Hertfordshire and lived in Hatfield Road (two doors away from The Three Horse Shoes PH, opposite what is now Notcutts Garden Centre (1901 and 1911). His parents were William & Ann Simpkins (nee Miles). According to the 1901 census, Albert (aged 17) was one of five children and had an elder brother, Frederick and three younger sisters: Ruth, Ellon and Lillian. By 1911 Albert was 26 years old, single. Only he and Lillian were still living with their parents. The census records that he worked as an ordinary agricultural labourer in 1901 and a farm labourer in 1911. Albert’s father William died on 2nd October 1916, aged 70, while Albert was serving in the Great War.

Additional Information

His mother, Ann, passed away on May 26th 1932, aged 83. Both are buried in the old graveyard at St Mark’s Church, Colney Heath.
