Pre War
David Horace Simons was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in late 1882, son of Alfred John Simons a Garden Nurseryman and Fanny Simons (nee Prosser). One of eight children, although one died in infancy.
1891 Census records David aged 8, living with his parents, brother Edward (10) and four sisters in, High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.
1901 Census the family have moved to Hoddesdon, Herts, David (18), is employed as a Gardener (not Domestic) living with his parents, brother Edward (20) and five sisters at, 1 Nursery Villa, Ware Road, Hoddesdon, Herts.
1911 Census, David is working as a Nurseryman, still living at home with his parent, and five sisters at, 26 Briscoe Road, Hoddesdon, Herts.
Wartime Service
David travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment with the service number 9110. Later transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment with the service number 235273.
Seeing action on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 25th March 1918, at the Battle of Bapaume (24th – 25th March 1918). He is buried in the Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave Ref; III. G. 1.
Additional Information
His effects of £8-8s-00d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £7, went to his father Alfred John Simons.
David is also commemorated on the family headstone in Hoddesdon Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:
