Frederick Chipperfield was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 21st May 1894, son of Arthur Chipperfield a, Garden Nursery Carman and Kate Chipperfield (nee Drury). Believed to be the youngest of seven children.
Baptised on 7th June 1894, in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts.
In March 1899, aged 4, he started at St Mary Infants school, Cheshunt, leaving in June 1901, to go to Dewhurst Endowed Boys school, Cheshunt, leaving in July 1907, aged 13, when the family left the area.
1901 Census records Frederick aged 6, living with his parents, brother William (14), sister Ada (12) and Sarah (10) in, Flampstead End Village, near Cheshunt, Herts. His mother Kate died in 1902, aged 41.
1911 Census records Frederick aged 16, his occupation is given as a Milk Carrier, and he is boarding with William and Martha Barnard and their family at, 195 Langham Road, West Green, Tottenham, Middx.
Wartime Service
Frederick enlisted at Hornsey, Lon/Middx, on 31st May 1915, joining the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number 5017 (later 201677) and posted to the 2nd/7th Battalion.
In July 1915, the Battalion moved to Gibraltar, from there to Alexandria, Egypt arriving on 31st August, and then on to Cairo, returning to Alexandria in November. On 8th May 1916, the Battalion sailed for France arriving at Marseilles on 15th May 1916, where the battalion was disbanded due to sickness, Fred was transferred to the 1st/7th Battalion.
Seeing action on the Western Front where he was wounded, he died of his wounds at No 3. Casualty Clearing Station, Grevillers, France, on 8th December 1917.
Additional Information
His eldest sister Mrs. Rosina Barnard received a dependents pension gratuity of £34-17s-8d, on 26th June 1918, his effects of £6-9s-1d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £14-10s-00d, also went to his sister Rosina.
Frederick is also commemorated on his parents' headstone in Cheshunt Burial Ground. His inscription reads:
SAFE IN THE ARMS OF JESUS"
