Pre War

Herbert John was born in 1894 in South Mimms to John Childs, a carman, and Elizabeth Jane (nee Chamberlain).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Alfred (born 1891), Herbert, Edwin (born 1900 were living at High Road, South Mimms.


On the 1911 Census still living at with his parents at High Road, South Mimms, Herbert was working as a houseboy (domestic, Alfred was a butcher’s apprentice, also present were Edwin, Percy (born 1907) and Lily (born 1910).


Herbert married Ethel Carter on 29 Jun 1915 at Edmonton Registry Office and made a home at 40a, Haringay Road, Tottenham.

Wartime Service

Herbert attested as Private S/306738 in the Army Service Corps on 18 Jan 1916. He gave his occupation as Baker and on 23 Feb 1916 was posted to 69 Field Bakery, Ampthill RoadBedford.


He was admitted to Kempston Military Hospital on 31 Mar 1917 suffering for Pericardial Pleurisy and died in Hospital ion 12 April 1917.

Additional Information

Arrears of £2 17s 10d was paid to his widow Ethel (living at 28 Prentice, Lavenham, Suffolk. No War Gratuity due to UK Service. His elder brother Alfred served in the Royal Fusiliers and was killed in action on 22 Aug 1917.
