Pre War

Stannard Silcock was born in 1881, in Barton Turf, Norfolk, son of Jacob Silcock a, Farmer and Alice Emily Silcock (nee Draper). One of ten children although three died in infancy.


Baptised on 5th April 1883, in the Parish of Barton Turf, Norfolk, with his brother Jacob (5) and sister Emily (4).


1891 Census records Stannard aged 9, at school, living with his parents, two sisters and two brothers at “Berry Hall”, Penny Gate, Barton Turf, Norfolk.


His father Jacob died in the early part of 1901, in St Faiths, Norfolk, aged 52.


1901 Census records Stannard aged 19, employed as a Garden Nursery Hand and a Boarder with Francis and Fanny Littlechild and their family, in Cotton Road, Potters Bar, Herts.


1911 Census, Stannard (29), is recorded as single, a Gardener and a Boarder at Rochford Nurseries Turnford Hall Institute, Turnford, Herts.


His mother Alice Emily Silcock died in October 1918, at Norwich, Norfolk, aged 66.

Wartime Service

Stannard enlisted in November 1914, posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment with the service number 2856, later 265706, when service numbers were standardised in 1917. No military records for Stannard were found other than his Medal Index Card (MID) showing he arrived in France on 23rd January 1915, and he was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, and the CWGC record. It is not known when or why Corporal Stannard Silcock, was discharged. He died at home on 9th July 1919, aged 38, he was buried on 14th July 1919, in Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Grave Ref: II. BT.

Additional Information

Probate of £167-4-4, went to Mrs. Harriet Ethelwyn Empson, his eldest sister.


His headstone (not CWGC) reads:
