Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Born on 3 Aug 1893 in Stockport, Cheshire son of John James and Eliza Emily Sidebotham of 7 Brazenose Street, Manchester.


Educated at Haileybury College 1907-10, he became a solicitor’s clerk and later lived at 4 Rochester Terrace, Buxton.

Wartime Service

The battalion embarked from Devonport arriving in Alexandria and thence to Suvla Bay, Gallipoli where they landed on 9 Aug 1915.


They suffered heavy losses there and were withdrawn to Mudros on 11 Dec 1915 and moved to Alexandria. From there they fought in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battles of Gaza and in the capture and defence of Jerusalem. In March, when Captain Sidebotham was killed they were fighting in the Battle of Tell’Asur.
