Harold Alfred Shrimpton was born on 10 September 1884 in Great Hasely, Oxfordshire. His mother is not known but on the 1891 he was living with his aunt and uncle, Constance and Frederick Busby, in Thame, Oxfordshire. He remained with them In 1901 at which time he was working as a grocer's assistant.
He married Selina Holloway on 6 June 1908 in Great Berkhamsted, Herts and had a daughter Lena May Blanche in 1910. The 1911 Census has the family living at Gossom’s End , Berkhamsted and Harold’s occupation as grocer’s assistant. He was formerly employed as branch manager of the Berkhamsted Co-operative Store.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Berkhamsted, originally joining the Yorkshire Regiment as Private 4782, later transferring to the 20th Battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment).
The 20th Battalion was formed by Lord Derby as one of Four ‘Pals’ battalions of white collar workers in October 1915. The 20th went to France in November 1915 and took part in the battles of the Somme 1916, Arras and Pilckem Ridge 1917.
Harold died of wounds on 13 January 1918 and is interred in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Baiileul. France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £6 16s 9d. She also received a pension of £1 0s 5d a week for herself and her daughter.
