Watford Borough Roll of Honour, Not on the Abbots Langley memorials
Pre War
Son of Julia (nee CHANDLER) and the late John SHORTLAND.
His parents married 24 August 1878 at St Lawrence’s, Abbot’s Langley, Herts. John died 1910 in the Watford district aged 60; Julia died 1922 in Watford aged 67, and was buried 19 June in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.
Arthur was born 2 March 1899 in Abbot’s Langley, and baptised 21 May 1899 at St Lawrence’s, Abbot’s Langley. He attended Callowland Board School, Watford, from 13 November 1911 to 24 June 1913, and resided in Stoke Newington, London.
On the 1901 Census, aged 2 he lived in Abbot’s Langley, with his parents and seven siblings. On the 1911 Census, at school aged 12, he still lived in Abbot’s Langley, with his widowed mother and four siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Shaftesbury Street, Formerly in the 4th London Regiment and was posted to the 2nd/4th (City of London) Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers).
He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died at No. 1 Australian General Hospital of wounds received in action.
