Pre War

Percy Gilbert Cheshire was born in 1898 in Berkhamsted, the son of Alfred and Bertha Cheshire and one of four children.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 25 Victoria Road, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a coach smith. By 1911 they had moved to Crop Oak Road, Great Berkhamsted,  his father was then working as a blacksmith for  a government contractor and Percy was working as a clerk at the gasworks. 


His parents later lived at 8 Cross Oak Street, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

Percy enlisted in London and served with the 10th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. 


He was killed in action during the Battle of Cambrai. His death was presumed on 30 November 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a pension of five shillings a week. His father received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of £9 1s 5d.
