Pre War

Born in Bushey in 1899, Gerald Leslie Cheeseman was the fourth of six children of William George and Leonora Eleanor (née McCarthy) Cheeseman, who were married in 1890 in the Chertsey registration district.


The family made their home at 62 Rosebery Road, Bushey and Gerald went to school in the village. His father was a police constable with the Metropolitan Police.


At the time of the 1911 census Gerald was still at school.

Wartime Service

Gerald enlisted in Whitehall, London as Private 57781 with the Worcestershire Regiment, 2nd Battalion, by which time the family had moved to Tufnell Park, London.


He served in France and Flanders and died on 8 May 1918, aged 18.


According to his pension record, this was at the 58th clearing station, France. It also shows the dependant as Mrs Leonora E Cheeseman of 33 Dalmeny Road, Tufnell Park, London and gives a pension of 3/6 from 19/11/18.


He was buried at Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery in northern France.
