Pre War

William Samuel was born in Enfield in 1892 to William Cheek, a Cowman, and Emma (nee Brown). The family were living at Ferny Hill Farm when William was baptised on 21 Aug 1892 at the same time as his older sister Mercy Amelia. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Bentleys Cottages, Mays lane, Chipping Barnet with the addition of two more sisters, Mary Clarissa and Jessie Ellen. On the 1911 Census the family were now living at 10, Gladstone Place, Chipping Barnet, William was a general labourer and there was a brother George Charles and another sister Daisy Kathleen.

William married Florence Eliza Abbott in early 1914 and she later lived at 1 Dallas Cottages, Bells Hill, Barnet.


Wartime Service

William enlisted in the Royal Engineers as Driver 90453. No Service Record exists but his Medal Card states he landed in France on 28 Aug 1915 with 128 Field Company Royal Engineers as a unit of 23 Division. 128 Field Company supported the troops of 23 Division in operations at Vimy, the Somme and in 1917 were involved in the successful Battle of Messines (7 -14 Jun 1917). William was killed in action on 14 Jun 1917.

War gratuity of £9 10s and arrears of £3 7s 7d was paid to his widow.
