Charles SHILLING was born in Milton, Kent in 1890, son of William James Shilling a Brickmaker and Hannah Eliza Shilling (nee Wood). One of seven children although one died in childhood.


1891 Census records Charles aged 1, living with his parents and brother William (2), at 17 Dean Street, Milton, Kent.


1901 Census records Charles (10) living with his parents, Brothers William (11), Arthur (9), and sisters Agnes (7) and Amy (1) (B1900 - D1905), at 15 Windmill Road, Edmonton, Middx. The family had a boarder Henry Haws a Bricklayer.


His mother Hannah died 1908, in Edmonton, Middx, aged 39.


1911 Census records Charles aged 20, employed as a General Labourer, and a boarder with Charles and Elizabeth Turner and their family in South Mimms, Herts. His father William is recorded as a Widower and a boarder with Charles and Ada Turner at 3 St James Cottages, Enfield, Middx. His sisters Amy (11), Ada (8) and Alice (5), are also boarding with the Turner Family.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted at Enfield, Middx, posted to the Royal Field Artillery as a driver and issued with the service number 53401, later transferred to the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Bombardier, issued with a new service number 146554. On completion of his training, he went to France on 13th July 1915.


Charles was wounded in action and returned to the UK and sent to Alexandra Military Hospital, Cosham, Portsmouth, Hants, were he died on 24th October 1918, He is buried in Portsdown (Christ Church) Military Cemetery, Hampshire. Grave Ref: B. 21. A.

Additional Information

His father William received a dependents pension of 8/- a week from 29th April 1919, and his effects of £7-15s-11d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £20.


His brother Lance Corporal 4508 Arthur Alfred Shilling, of the Machine Gun Company, died on 17th November 1916, of wound received in action.
