William Charter was born in Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, on 23rd October 1887, son of John Charter an Army Pensioner and Agricultural Labourer and Georgianna Charter (nee Hall). The eldest of four known children, Frederick, Annie and Harry.


1891 Census records William aged 3, as visiting Samuel Russell and his housekeeper, Ann Tarby at, Duck End, Godmanchester, Hunts. His parents, brother Frederick (2) and sister Annie (6 days old) are recorded as living in Green Lane, Fen Stanton, Hunts. No 1901 Census record, for William or his family was found.


William married Ada Moseley the daughter of Alfred and Susannah Ann Mosely of Tottenham, Middx, at St. James Church, Enfield Highway, Middx, on 7th June 1908. They went on to have three children John William (1909-1910), Frederick Henry (1910-1911) and George Edward (1913-1976).


1911 Census records William (24) married to Ada, they have one son Frederick Henry 9 months, and were living at, 2 Henrietta Cottages, Grove Road, Enfield Wash, Middx.

Wartime Service

William enlisted at Ponders End, Middx, posted to the East Surrey Regiment with the service number 3582. 

Seeing service with the 2nd, 9th 1st & 8th Battalions. William landed in France on 27th April 1915, seeing action on the Western Front. He was transferred to the 8th Battalion, on 28th March 1917, and promoted Lance Corporal on 31st March 1917, and was killed in action on 8th January 1918, during a raid on an enemy trench. 

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium to the missing.

Additional Information

A dependents pension of 19/2 a week from 27th July 1918, was awarded to a Miss Amy Debenham of Cheshunt Park, Cheshunt, Herts, as Guardian of George Edward Charter. Williams effects of £8-18s-3d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £15-10s-00d, also went to Miss Amy Debenham for George.
