Alias Bertie William Chapman
George Chapman was born in Radwinter, Essex, on 18th May 1891, son of Joshua Chapman a, Carter and Ada Chapman, (nee Chapman). One of nine children.
His parents Joshua Chapman and Ada Chapman both of Radwinter, married in the Parish of Radwinter, Essex, on 31st March 1888.
He was Baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Radwinter, Essex, on 28th June 1891.
1901 Census records George aged 9, living with his parents and five siblings at, 9 Macers Lane, Wormley, Herts.
George travelled to London in 1907, aged 16, to enlist, using the alias, Bertie William Chapman (his eldest brothers name), joining the “The Kings” (Shropshire Light Infantry) with the service number 8600.
He sailed to India with the 2nd Battalion, "The Kings" (Shropshire Light Infantry), in 1909.
1911 Census records (George) Bertie William Chapman aged 24, single, and a Private in the 2nd Battalion, “The Kings” (Shropshire Light Infantry), stationed in India.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war (George) Bertie and his Battalion were stationed at Secunderabad, Telangana, India. Returning to England in November 1914, arriving at Plymouth, Devon, moving to Winchester Camp in Hampshire, and coming under the orders of 80th Brigade of the 27th Division.
The Battalion was mobilized for war in December 1914. Landing at Le Havre, France, on 21st December 1914. Seeing action on the Western Front, (George) Bertie died on 10th May 1915, of wounds received in action.
Additional Information
His father Mr. J. Chapman, 72, Queens Road, Waltham Cross, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "EVER REMEMBERED BY ALL AT HOME".
His effects of £14-11s-1d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5, went to his father Joshua.
His younger brother Private 14991 Ernest James Chapman of the Essex Regiment was killed in action on 27th April 1916.
*1 George is also commemorated on his parents' headstone in Cheshunt Burial Ground. His inscription reads:
"ALSO THEIR SON
GEORGE WHO DIED OF WOUNDS AT YPRES MAY 10 1915 AGED 24 YEARS"
