Frank was born in Baldock in 1898 the son of James Chapman, and Emma (nee Mumford).


On the 1901 Census Frank was living with his mother at the home of William Mumford, his grandfather, together with uncle Arthur Mumford and Aunt Ada at 47 the street Hertford Heath. On the 1911 Census Frank and his mother Emma were living at Meadow View, Hertford Heath, the home of Ellen Bell (nee Mumford) with Grandfather William, Edith Mary Bell and William Arthur Bell.

Wartime Service

Frank was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 266188. There are no service records available for Frank so there are no details of his arrival in the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshires.


Their War Diary for November 1918 record the award of the Military Medal to Frank on 2nd Nov 1918. On the 4th Nov 1918 the Battalion was detailed for an operation at Preux-au-Boise during this operation among the casualties were 3 Missing, Frank was one of them. He was later reported as Wounded and Missing, at some time his death was presumed to be 4 Nov 1918. His remains were recovered and he is reburied in Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £23 and arrears of £3 4s 5d was paid to mother.
