Pre War
Edward Shepherd was born in Hertingfordbury, Herts on 22 September 1887, the son of Joseph and Georgina Shepherd. The family were living there in 1901 and 13 year old Edward was working as a telegraph boy. He was later appointed as a Postman with the London Postal Service, serving with them for 12 Years 8 months, starting as a temporary postman in Hertford on 29 May 1905 being paid 17 shillings a week.
He married Blanche Emily Wakelin of Hertingfordbury on 14 May 1910 at St Matthew's Church, Fulham and they were living at 25 Hillside Grove, Chase Road, Southgate, North London on the 1911 Census with 7-month-old daughter Blanche. Edward was then working as a postman. They later had four more children. He was living in Castle Street, Berkhampstead at the time of enlistment.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in St Pancras, London and initially joined the London Regiment, 1st Battalion, as Private 1655. He was promoted to Sergeant and served with the 29th (County of London)(Reserve) Battalion, later being seconded as Sergeant to the 2nd Battalion, London Regiment.
Edward was killed in action on 16 February 1918, aged 30, and is buried in Chauny Communal Cemetery British Extension, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £19 10s and pay owing of £16 3s 11d. She also received a pension of £2 0s 5d a week for herself and her five children.
Medal Index Card suggests that Edward Shepherd was also awarded the Territorial Force War Medal.
