Pre War

Edward Chambers was born in 1888 in Walton, Bucks, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Chambers and baptised there on 3 June 1888.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Walton where his father was an agricultural labourer. They remained there in 1901 and William was working as a General farm labourer. He married Anna Sophie Wallduck on 28 March 1910 at Shenley, Herts and on the 1911 Census he was living with his wife at Mary Cottage, Shenley Lane, London Colney and working as a Carman for a Cartage Contractor. His widow later lived at 7 Aldenham Road, 37 Scrubbit Square, Radlett, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted in Watford, Herts and originally served as a Private in the Norfolk Regiment under reg. no. 27416 and later transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 1st/7th Battalion under reg. no. 29262.


He was killed during the third Battle of Ypres, otherwise known as Passchendaele and his body was not recovered for burial or not identified and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. 

Additional Information

N.B. On some records his regimental no. is given as 29262 and on others 26952. His widow Annie received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 17s 5d. She was also awarded a pension of 13s 9d a week from 18 March 1918.
