Alfred Chamberlain was born in Ickleford, Herts on 29 April 1876, the son of William and Eliza Chamberlain, and baptised at St Katherine's, Ickleford on 4 June 1876.

On the 1881 Census the family were living in Ickleford where his father was working as a Shoe Maker. His mother was working with him as a Shoe Closer. At that time Alfred was one of six children. By the 1891 Census, Alfred, aged 14, was recorded living with his grandfather Richard Chamberlain also in Ickleford and working as an Agricultural Labourer. In 1901 he was back with his parents who remained in Ickleford and was then working as a Railway Navvy.

He later lived in Hull, Yorks.

Alfred enlisted in Northallerton, Yorks and joined the Yorkshire Regiment, serving in France with the 1st/5th and later the 4th battalion, initially under Reg. No. 5521.

He was killed in action and death was presumed on or since 11 November 1916. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
