Thomas Shearman was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 20th April 1882, son of William Shearman a Plumber and Sarah Ann Shearman (nee Hammond. The youngest of eight children.


Baptised on 18th June 1882, in Cheshunt, Herts, his mother Sarah died the following year 1883.


His father remarried in the early part of 1885, to Mary Ann Tomalin in Luton, Beds.


Thomas attended St Marys Infants School, Cheshunt, from May 1886 to June 1890 when he transferred to Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, leaving in January 1896, aged 13 to start work.


1891 Census records Thomas aged 8, living with his father and stepmother, sister Florence (12) and brother George (10), in Prospect Place, Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census, Thomas (18), is employed as a Plumber, living with his father, stepmother and brother George, at 101 Turners Hill, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census, Thomas (28) is single, living at 19 Turners Hill, Cheshunt, Herts, with his father and stepmother and employed as a Plumber.

Wartime Service

Thomas enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the Leicestershire Regiment with the service number 33139.


On completion of his training, he saw action on the Western Front. Thomas was Killed in Action on 8th October 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres (31st July – 10th November 1917), he is buried in the Butts New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood, Belgium, Grave Re: XI. B. II.

Additional Information

His effects of £2-15s-2d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £6-10s-00d, went to his sister Florence Orton.


His Headstone Inscription: “UNTIL THE DAY DAWN" was requested by his sister, Mrs. F. Orton, of Alma House, Edward Road, New Barnet.
