Pre War

William Albert was born in 1897 in Harpenden to Albert Chalkley, a gardener, and Ellen (nee Pinney).


On the 1911 Census the family were living at Wheathampstead Road. By the 1911 Census William, who was working as a grocer’s errand boy and older brother Arthur, an Ironmonger shop assistant, were living with their grandmother at Grove Road.

Wartime Service

William's service is counted from 2 Mar 1916 on Discharge document and was enlisted on 18 Jan 1917 in the 3rd Battalion Essex regiment as Private 35605.


He was examined by an Army medical board on 9 May 1917, having problems with his lungs. William was discharged on 30 May 1917. He died in Harpenden on 1 Jun 1918 and is buried in St Nicholas Churchyard.
