Pre War

Herbert George Chalkley was born 1898 in Tewin, Herts, the son of Florence Emma Chalkley and baptised on 21 November 1898 in Tewin. He was registered and baptised as Herbert George Chalkley.

On the 1901 Census he was living with his grandparents William and Sarah Chalkley at Lower Green, Tewin and remained with them in 1911 when he was a schoolboy. (He was listed as their grandson in 1901 and son in 1911). His mother married Samuel Tyler in 1901.

Wartime Service

George enlisted at Hertford and initially served in the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no., 5872, later transferring to the Royal Berkshire Regiment.

He was killed in action on 2 October 1916 during enemy shelling of trenches near Thiepval.

His body was original found at map ref. 57d. R.26. c.30.35. There was no cross on grave, he was identified by disc and Royal Berks titles.

Additional Information

Although recorded as his father, his grandfather William received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 9s1d.

Pension records show Mrs Sarah Chalkley of Lower Green, Tewin, Welwyn, Herts as his grandmother but give no indication of any pension amount received.

N.B. His uncle was also named Herbert and born two years earlier in 1896. As they were both living in the same house Herbert George became known as George presumably to save confusion.

His uncle Herbert also served, joining the 16th Lancers in August 1914 but was discharged as medically unfit for service on 15 October 1914.
