Fredrick Chalkley was born in Markyate in 1892 (baptised 3 Dec 1893) to Willam Chalkley, straw hat blocker and Annie, a hat machinist, (nee Wright.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Percy William (born 18890, Horace (born 1890), Frederick (born 1892) and Harry (born 1901 were living at Hicks Lane Markyate.

Frederick enlisted as Private 9531 in 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment around Feb 1910.

On the 1911 Census he was listed with Bedfordshire Regiment at Barracks in Aldershot. His parenst with Harry and Reginald (born 1906) were living at 13, Hicks Road, Markyate.

Wartime Service

The 1st Battalion were stationed at Mullingar, Ireland at the outbreak of the Great War and were landed in France on 15/16 Aug 1914 as part of 15 Brigade 5 Division. They took part in the Battle of Mons (23 Aug 1914)  and the Battle of Le Cateau during the retreat from Mons, the Battles of the Marne and the Aisne forcing the retreat of the Germans. They fought the battle of La Bassee (10 Oct -2 Nov 1914.


Frederick was reported killed in action on 9 Nov 1914 during a period when no major engagement was in progress.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £6 and arrears of £16 18s 2d was paid to his father William. Brother Horace served with 2nd Battalion Bedforshire Regiment as Cpl 9377 and was killed in action on 26 Oct 1914
