Pre War
Charles Frank Shaw was born on 7th December 1897, in Cheshunt, Herts, son of Frank Ernest Shaw a Nursery Gardener and Alice Louisa Shaw (nee Bell). The eldest of seven children.
Baptised on 30th January 1898, in the Parish of Wormley, Herts. The family were living in Cheshunt at the time of his Baptism.
1901 Census records Charles aged three, living with his parents, sisters Gertrude (1) and Florence 1 month at, Nursery Garden Houses, Birchanger, Essex.
1911 Census, Charles aged thirteen is at school, living with his parents, five sisters and brother Herbert (8) still at Nursery Garden Houses, Birchanger. His Uncle Frederick Shaw (43) is living with the family.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted at Stanstead, Essex, posted to the London Regiment with the service number 4874, later transferred to the Machine gun Corps with the service number 36863.
Charles was wounded in action and died back in the UK, he is buried in All Sains Churchyard, Whitstable, Kent.
Additional Information
His Headstone inscription “HE FOUGHT THE “GOOD FIGHT” AND PASSED ON TO ETERNAL REST” was requested by his mother Alice Shaw of Rochford Nurseries, Stanstead, Essex.
