Pre War

Geoffrey George Edwin Cash was born on 1st January 1895 and baptised on 21st March, at St Michaels, Coventry, Warks., to parents Sidney Cash and Elsie (nee Alker).  He had one brother Reginald John and their father was a ribbon manufacturer. 


Geoffrey attended Cotton House at Marlborough College from 1909 to midsummer 1913.  He then went on to Magdalen College Oxford.

Wartime Service

Geoffrey joined up on the outbreak of war and was commissioned as Lieutenant in 6th Bn.  He sailed to Gallipoli on 4th August 1915 and fought at Anzac Cove and at Suvla Bay, he was later invalided home. 


In June 1916 he went to France and was attached to the 8th Battalion which was part of the 74th Brigade.  They fought at the Somme in the battles for Thiepval and then Bazentin and Pozieres. 


On 26th August 1916 Lt Cash was leading an attack against German trenches in the Leipzig salient when he was seen wounded three times but carried on and was reported missing after the action, presumed dead.  His body was found and identified by his effects.


His Effects of £77 9s 4d was paid to the account of his father Sydney.

Additional Information

His brother Mr R J Cash, The Moat House, Keresley, Coventry ordered his headstone inscription: "So he passed over and all the trumpets sounded for him on the other side" Probate records show that he was residing at Moat House, Keresley, Warks., at the time of his death.
