Reginald Frank Sharp was born in 1892 in Boxmoor, Herts, the son and youngest child of George and Mary Sharp and one of seven children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Spotted Cow Public House at 116 Cotterells Road, Hemel Hempstead, where his father was the Publican. The remained there in 1911 at which time Reginald was working as an Apprentice to the Ironmonger Trade.
His mother's address on pension records was given as 21 Stone Street, Essex Villa, Aldershot and later, Montrose, Beacon Hill, Hindhead, Surrey.
Wartime Service
Reginald enlisted in St Albans and served with the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
It is not known exactly when he was sent to France, but he was killed in action on 15 September 1916 during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (Battle of the Somme) in which the Battalion suffered heavy casualties.
Reginald has no known grave, and his name is one of 93 men from the 8th Battalion commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France, who died on the same day.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £2 19s 6d. She also received a pension of 8 shillings a week.
