Pre War
George was born in Great Munden, Ware in 1877 the second son of Benjamin Sharp, a farm labourer, and Emma (nee Clark). On the 1881 Census George and the rest of the family of Father, Mother, Elder brother Thomas W and sister Mary were living at Hughes Green, Standon.
George attested for the 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment on 10 Jan 1898 as Private 3629 and joined the Militia on 16 Feb 1900. A contingent of 500 officers and men embarked the SS Goorkha the following in Feb 1900 for service in South Africa, George received the South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony & Transvaal. Most of the battalion returned home on the SS Guelph in June 1902. After service in South Africa he was placed on Reserve from I Jul 1902 until he was discharged (time expired) on 9 Jan 1904.He received a South African War Gratuity of £5.
George married Margaret Ann Phillips in 1903. On the 1911 Census George and family were living at Potters Green, High Cross, Ware. Margaret Anne Sharp, was recorded, after George’s death, living at Council Cottages, Dane End, Ware, Herts.
Wartime Service
George enlisted as Private 4779 Hertfordshire Regiment, possibly around Mar 1915. He was attached to the 8th Battalion, Gloucester Regiment and was reported Missing.
His death was presumed to be 30 Jul 1916, which would be during the Battle of Pozieres (part of Battle of Somme).
Additional Information
War gratuity of £5 10s and arrears of £2 14s 1d was paid to his widow.
