Biography
The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian
(1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:
Bernard Cary who died on 10th May, from wounds received in action, was the fourth son of the late Francis Joseph Cary, of Gravesend, and Mrs. Cary of 36 Chapel Park Road, St. Leonards-on-Sea.
He entered St. Edmund's in 1892, during the presidency of Monsignor Crook. After leaving St. Edmund's he went to Ushaw for two years, at the end of which his father wished him to try for the Army. He studied some time with Mr. Gibson, the well known army crammer, but later abandoned the idea of a military career in favour of commerce.
This he took up and had a fair amount of success until be joined the London Scottish, and after the usual hard training, left for the front last September. His letters to his mother and brothers and sisters were all full of cheerfulness, and all through the rigours of last winter he showed all the fine spirit which has become so characteristic of the British soldier.
