Pre War

Reginald was born circa 1895 in Walkern. His parents were George and Caroline Elizabeth Esturich Carter (née Swain), who were married on 16 February 1895

In 1901 the family were living in Walkern Street, Walkern. His parents George (32) and Caroline (27), George was a boot maker working from home. Their children were Reginald (6), Lewis (4), Arthur Henry (3) and Alfred (1).
Son

In 1911 they were living in High St, Walkern, George was still a boot maker. Their children listed were all those above, Reginald at 16, was recorded as a farm labourer but unemployed, Arthur was at school, but also now listed was Donald (9).

Officially recorded as born Walkern and enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

He served in 4 Company of the Hertfordshire Regiment and his Regimental number was 266935.

He had been taken prisoner and died, probably as a result of the flu epidemic then raging across Europe, at the Niederzwehren Prisoner of War camp in Germany. The date of his capture has not been discovered, but as his name does not appear in the British Red Cross Enquiry List of 1917, he was probably captured at some time during 1918 and most likely in March or April of that year. According to hi soldiers effect records, he died of sickness while a prisoner of war at Bayreuth, Germany.

He was buried in Plot IV, Row M, Grave 7 of the Niederzwehren Cemetery in Germany.

After his death £54 16s 4d was authorised to go to his father on 8 September 1919.
