Pre War

Henry was born at West Hyde on the 22nd of September 1898, and baptised on the 24th of November, the son of William, a Labourer, and Ellen (nee Ford). They had married at West Hyde on the 6th of February 1881. In 1901 the family were at 15 Royal Exchange, West Hyde, and included eight children: Emily (20), Ellen (15), James (13), George (10), Thomas (8), Henry (6 and listed as Harry), Louisa (5) and John (1) all are recorded as born in West Hyde.

Henry has not been traced in 1911 although his family was still at the same address in West Hyde, with the children now including: James, George, Thomas, John and David (8) and the document confirms that William and Ellen had 12 children of whom 2 had died.

Recorded as enlisting in Uxbridge, Middlesex.

Wartime Service

As part of 86th Brigade, 29th Division Henry’s Battalion landed on the Gallipoli beaches on the 25th of April 1915.

He is presumed to have died during the Battle of Gully Ravine on the 28th of June as 86th Brigade advanced along Gully Spur.
