Pre War

Frank was born in Monken Hadley, Barnet in 1888 to William Carter, a general dealer, and Georgina (nee Newell).


On the 1891 Census Frank had an older brother, John W and a younger brother Frederick and they were living at 168, High Street, Monken Hadley. Frank’s father died in 1897. On the 1901 Census Frank was working as a newsboy, his mother’s occupation is listed as newsagent/shopkeeper and the family additions were William, born 1893, Emily, born 1895, Walter, born 1897. On the 1911 the family were now living at 81 New Road Barnet and Frank was working as a brewer’s drayman.

Wartime Service

Frank was enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as Rifleman 201372 in the 20th (Service) Battalion (British Empire League Pioneers). This unit deployed to France in Mar 1916 and was attached to 3rd Division. At some time Frank had been promoted to Lance Corporal and attached to 103 Trench Mortar Battery.


According to the CWGC records state Frank was buried on 19 Aug 1918 on Grave Registration and Concentration reports but his was officially recorded as 1 Sep 1918. A War Office Daily List dated 15 Oct 1918 stated he was accidently killed.
