Walkern War Memorial

Arthur was born circa 1897 or 1898 in Walkern and was baptised 24 April 1898. His parents were George and Caroline Elizabeth Esturich Carter (née Swain), who were married on 16 February 1895

In 1901 the family were living in Walkern Street, Walkern. His parents George (32) and Caroline (27), George was a boot maker working from home. Their children were Reginald (6), Lewis (4), Arthur Henry (3) and Alfred (1).
Son

In 1911 they were living in High St, Walkern, George was still a boot maker. Their children listed were all those above, Reginald at 16, was recorded as a farm labourer but unemployed, Arthur was at school, but also now listed was Donald (9).

Officially recorded as born and living in Walkern and enlisted in Bedford.

Wartime Service

At the time of his death the Battalion were in the frontline at Forceville. However, according to his soldiers effect records, he died of in a war hospital in Peronnes. Arthur is believed to have died as a result of disease rather than combat injuries.




Additional Information

His brother Reginald of the Hertfordshire Regiment died as a POW in Germany later on 28 November 1918.


There are joint pension cards for  Arthur and his brother, Reginald. The dependant listed as his mother Caroline of High St. Walkern near Stevenage, Herts. After her death in 1922 the card was amended to their father George.


After his death £17 19s 2d was authorised to go to his mother on 14 May 1919. The sun included a war gratuity of £9
