Ernest was born in Islington on the 30th of May 1889 and was the son of Henry Beresford Carroll (Export Manager) and his wife Elizabeth Jane (née Jackson).


He was educated at North Harringay School, Clark's College, and King's College.


Before the war Ernest was a Civil Service Clerk and subsequently became a journalist. He joined the Hertfordshire Yeomanry in 1908 and was called up upon mobilisation in August 1914.

Wartime Service

Ernest served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Gallipoli and was killed in action during the advance from Suvla Bay to Chocolate Hill on the 21st of August 1915.


A comrade wrote: "He was a keen and plucky fellow."
