Cecil Shadbolt was born in 1895 in Tewin, Herts. the son of Frederick and Hannah Shadbolt, and baptised there on 14 July 1895. he was one of seven children.


On the 1901 Census, the family were living with his widowed grandmother, Mary Tyler, at Lower Green, Tewin, where his father was working as a woodman. They remained living with his grandmother on the 1911 Census at Lower Green, Tewin, Herts and Cecil was working as general labourer.

Wartime Service

Cecil enlisted at Bedford and served with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in  France from 26 July 1915. 


He fought in the Battle of Loos in September and was engaged in several phases of the the Battle of the Somme in 1916, particularly The Battles of Albert, Delville Wood and Le Transloy. The following year the 2nd Battalion were involved in the Battles of Arras and Passchedaele, amongst others. 


He was killed in action on 23 October 1918, aged 22, during operations north east of Le Cateau during the Final Advance in Picardy and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £19 and pay owing of £10 14s 3d. Pension cards exist but do not give any indication of the amount of pension received. 


His mother, Mrs Hannah Shadbolt of Cannons Cottages, Tewin Lower Green, Welwyn, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: “I HAVE LOVED THEE WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE THEREFORE WITH LOVING KINDNESS HAVE I DRAWN THEE".


Brother to Alfred Shadbolt who also served with the Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action on 23 April 1917. He is also named on the Tewin memorial.
