Alfred Shadbolt was born on 7 February 1889 in Tewin, Herts, the son of Frederick and Hannah Shadbolt, and baptised there on 10 March 1889.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Upper Green, Tewin where his father was working as a Labourer. By the 1901 Census the family had moved to Lower Green, Tewin and were living with his widowed grandmother, Mary Tyler, with his father working as a woodman. They remained living with his grandmother on the 1911 Census at Lower Green, Tewin and Alfred was working as general labourer. His parents later lived at Cannins Cottages, Tewin, Welwyn, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted in Hertford and served with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 30 September 1915,

He was killed in action on 23 April 1917 during the attack on La Coulotte, part of the Battle of Arras.

He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £10 and pay owing of £10 12s 4d. Pension cards exist but do not give any indication of the amount of pension received. 

Brother to Cecil Shadbolt who also served with the Bedfordshire Regiment but was killed in action on 23 October 1918.  He is also named on the Tewin memorial.
