Pre War

Albert John Sewell was born in Bishop's Stortford in 1890 to Edward and Fanny Sewell and baptised on 31 August 1890 at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford.

On the 1901 Census he was living with his family in King Street, Bishop's Stortford. He joined the 4th Bedfordshire Regiment (Reg. No. 6021) in Hockerill, Bishop's Stortford on 25 January 1908 into the Extra Special Reserve and was then released to join the regular army on 23 October 1909 in London. Prior to enlistment he was employed as a Groom.  On the 1911 Census, he was in Africa, employed as a Driver in the Army Service Company.  However on 18 December 1912 he was in custody of the Civil Power, then returned to duty on 30 March 1913.  He was discharged on 12 June 1913 having been convicted by the Civil Power of a charge of gross indecency.

Wartime Service

He must have re-enlisted at the outbreak of war and served initially in the Devonshire Regiment, later transferring to the Labour Corps.  He died in 2nd London General Hospital from  pneumonia and bronchitis.  His medal roll index card lists no medals received which was possibly due to his conviction.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £5 5s and pay owing of £5 5s 6d awarded to his father Edward and £3 5s 0d for funeral expenses to his mother Fanny.
